PYSOLO: PYrolysis of Biomass by Concentrated SOLar pOwer

Short Introductive summary

The PYSOLO (PYrolysis of biomass by concentrated SOLar pOwer) project aims to develop an innovative, fully renewable process that combines concentrated solar power (CSP) with biomass pyrolysis. By using solar heat to sustain the pyrolysis reaction, the production of bio-oil, biochar, and pyrogas is maximized, while CO2 emissions are minimized, offering both economic and environmental benefits over conventional pyrolysis. Within the project, the two key components of the PYSOLO concept, the solar particle receiver and a pyrolysis reactor, will be tested at TRL4. PYSOLO is expected to achieve over 80% carbon efficiency, a bio-oil reduction costs by at least 20% compared to a conventional pyrolysis process and it is expected to show substantially negative CO2 emissions on LCA basis (-0.3 kgCO2 per kg of biomass input).
