Targeted Selection of Native Yeasts Isolated from the Industrial Process: A Strategy for Optimizing Bioethanol Production

The growing intensification of climate change, driven by greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, demands a transition to renewable energy sources. Bioethanol, derived from plant biomass, stands out as a sustainable alternative to gasoline, with the potential to reduce GHG emissions by up to 90%, depending on the feedstock and production process. Brazil, the second-largest ethanol producer in the world, has made significant advancements in the sector, although it still faces technical challenges—particularly in the selection of yeasts used in alcoholic fermentation. Screening and characterizing the fermentative microbiota of each industrial unit are essential for selecting native strains with high dominance and persistence. Studies indicate that the use of selected native yeasts is more effective than commercial strains, promoting greater stability and yield throughout the harvests. This approach represents a promising strategy for optimizing bioethanol production in Brazil.
