Intensified Production of Enzymes for Biofuels by Solid-State Fermentation: From the Bioreactor to the Formulation

Short Introductive summary

This study explores the integration of enzyme production into second-generation bioethanol biorefineries through solid-state fermentation (SSF), aiming to enhance sustainability and industrial efficiency. By using a multilayer packed-bed bioreactor and cultivating the thermophilic fungus Myceliophthora thermophila on agro-industrial residues, the research investigates optimal conditions for enzyme yield, recovering, purification and stability. Results demonstrate the feasibility and advantages of continuous operation of the bioreactor coupled to solid-liquid extraction by percolation, supporting a circular economy model and contributing to biomass valorization, biofuel cost reduction and decarbonization efforts. The findings align with key UN Sustainable Development Goals related to clean energy, innovation, sustainable production and climate action.
