Valorization of Fish Waste from Industry: A Circular Economy Strategy Supported by Life Cycle Assessment
Short Introductive summary
The primary objective of VALORISH is to demonstrate the practicality of converting fish by-products (e.g., salmon, cod, shrimp, hake, cephalopods, tuna, trout, among others) into a variety of marketable products through low-impact, scalable technologies. Particularly, VALORISH includes sustainability assessments, which are aimed at reducing greenhouse gases. Five case studies have been defined exploiting different fish wastes sources within different regional and operational contexts, each applying a tailored combination of recovery processes to evaluate multiple technological configurations. Specifically, VALORISH concept includes: i) fish oil extraction, ii) collagen recovery, iii) production of mineral-rich compounds through calcination, iv) generation of protein hydrolysates through proteolytic fermentation, and v) microbial production of compounds such as astaxanthin, vitamin B12 and bacteriocins from fish wastes-derived substrates. Anaerobic digestion is also integrated to fermentation biomass residuals to enable energy recovery and improve the overall efficiency of the process.
