Comparative Hydrothermal Carbonization of Wheat Straw and Wood Residues: Conditions and Feedstock Particle-Size Effect

This study investigates hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) of wheat straw and wood residues under comparable process conditions to evaluate the influence of feedstock type and particle size on hydrochar yield, energy content, and ash behavior. Results show that HTC effectively upgrades both feedstocks into high-energy-density solids (~30 MJ kg?¹) while revealing contrasting ash trends—decreasing for wood residues but increasing for wheat straw. Particle-size analysis indicates that smaller wood particles promote greater ash leaching at higher severity levels. The findings demonstrate HTC’s potential for both pre-processing and renewable solid-fuel production from agricultural and forestry residues.
