Valorization of organic waste streams and residues into energy and materials
Energy Valorization from Landfill Reclamation in terms of High Quality Refuse Derived Fuel
Short Introductive summary
This study focuses on the quality upgrading of Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) by converting it into Refuse-Derived Fuel (RDF) through biological and mechanical processes. The physical and chemical composition, as well as the heating value, of reclaimed MSW at different depths were investigated and compared to those of fresh MSW. Reclaimed MSW is then mechanically processed to be converted into RDF, called course-RDF. The results show that old MSW reclaimed from landfill contains no organic waste. The main composition is plastic and soil-like materials. After mechanical processing, the content of high-heating-value plastic increases from 49% by weight. in old MSW to 69%wt. in RDF, whilst the soil-like material slightly decreases from 32%wt. in old MSW to 24%wt. in RDF. The increase in plastic portion leads to the increase in heating value of RDF from 17,992 kJ/kg in old MSW to 23,360 kJ/kg in RDF, based on as-received basis, which is suitable for using as high-quality fuel in power plants to substitute the use of fossil fuel, hence, reducing the global warming effect as a consequence.
