The Renewable Refinery of the future: a Life Cycle Assessment Study

Short Introductive summary

This study presents a life cycle assessment (LCA) of an integrated renewable refinery concept aimed at producing renewable transport fuels and chemicals. The refinery combines three technological routes: pyrolysis of biomass, methanol synthesis, and Fischer-Tropsch synthesis, utilizing biogenic feedstocks, direct air-captured CO2, and renewable hydrogen. LCA is carried out according to ISO 14040/14044 and the provisions made by the EU renewable energy directive (revised RED II). By evaluating the entire refinery as a hybrid bioenergy system, the study provides a holistic view of its environmental performance. The results identify key environmental hotspots and offer insights for system optimization. This work highlights the relevance of integrated future refinery concepts for the transition to renewable fuels and chemicals and supports scenario development.
