Short Introductive summary

The application of biobased and circular products in the construction sector can contribute significantly to climate change mitigation. In the Netherlands, the environmental impact of buildings is increasingly used as an award criterion in construction projects: the lower the environmental impact, the more favourably the client will assess a bid or tender. It is therefore important that the environmental performance of biobased building materials are quantified and included in the Dutch National Environmental Database (NMD), and the methodology used for quantifying their climate impact takes into account the benefits of temporary biogenic carbon storage. The objective of this study is to review scientific approaches for quantifying the effect of biogenic carbon storage in building materials on global warming potential (GWP), and to propose a generally applicable methodology to valorize the GWP benefits of biobased materials used in long-lasting building applications to be incorporated in the NMD Determination Method.

Dr. Iris Vural Gursel, is a senior scientist at Wageningen Food & Biobased Research with a PhD in chemical engineering. She works on several national, EU and international projects on the topics of sustainability assessment of biobased products and novel biomass conversion technologies.
