Biomass conversion into bio-based chemicals and high-value compounds (part 1)

Bench-Scale Green Biorefinery Processing, Analysis and Comparison of Sustainable Grassland-Based Feedstocks into Proteins and Bio-Based Intermediate Products

Short Introductive summary

The current paper encompasses a bench scale analysis of diverse grassland-based feedstocks for green biorefinery in Ireland and the subsequent analysis and comparison of derived product streams. This research is completed within the context of the CBE JU-funded Rural BioReFarmeries project and will be used to further inform selection and scale-up of green biorefinery feedstocks to pilot and demonstration scale. The feedstocks compared include various fresh grass-clover mixtures, multi-species grassland and grass silage. The analysis includes a comparative mass balance of different co-product yields from different feedstocks and an analysis of pertinent co-product characteristics based on sample replicates.
