Multi-Period Optimization of Sugarcane, Corn, and Agave Biorefineries for Sustainable Aviation Fuel Production in Brazil
Short Introductive summary
The growing demand for sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) has encouraged the development of integrated biorefinery networks using diverse biomass sources. This study presents a multiperiod Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP) model to optimize the SAF supply chain via the Alcohol-to-Jet (ATJ) pathway using sugarcane, corn, and agave as feedstocks. The model integrates economic, environmental, and resource constraints, accounting for the distinct cultivation and harvesting periods of each biomass. Considering a SAF demand of 8.2 Mt, the optimization results indicate a minimum selling price (MSP) of 0.941 USD L?¹, confirming economic feasibility. Raw materials represent the largest cost share. Environmentally, transportation and material use emit 107,821 t CO2 and 34,599,541 t CO2, respectively, but the system offsets 96,022,887 t CO2 through biogenic carbon recycling and substitution of fossil jet fuel. These results highlight the strong mitigation potential and economic competitiveness of multi-biomass integrated biorefineries for large-scale SAF production
