Innovative Biochar that Reduces Biogas CO2 and Produces a Balanced Biofertilizer from Digestate

Short Introductive summary

Altex has developed a patented process for the production of a drop-in biofuel from biomass that also co-produces a biochar that can be applied to improve agricultural productivity. Also, utilization of this biochar in anerobic digesters has the potential to produce pipe-line quality renewable natural gas along with the biochar-based fertilizer. Production and use of this bio-fertilizer has the potential to produce a negative carbon intensity biofuel and renewable natural gas and thereby reduce the millions of tons of greenhouse gas emissions. In this project, Altex has teamed up with Argonne National Laboratory (ANL) to show the feasibility of the production of pipe-line quality natural gas and a balanced bio-fertilizer and evaluate the benefits of using this improved bio-fertilizer to grow crops. The salient results from the feasibility testing along with the techno-economic and sustainability benefits will be discussed.
