Building Africa’s Sustainable Aviation Fuel Landscape: Policy Pathways, Industrial Readiness, and Regional Cooperation
Short Introductive summary
Africa’s transition to Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF) offers both a decarbonisation pathway and a driver of industrial growth. This study, led by the Roundtable on Sustainable Biomaterials (RSB), maps Africa’s emerging SAF landscape across feedstock availability, policy frameworks, and industrial readiness. Drawing on stakeholder consultations and analysis of six leading economies, it identifies growing momentum—from feasibility projects in Kenya and Ethiopia to retrofitting potential in South Africa and Egypt—supported by the AU’s Continental SAF and LCAF Strategy (2024–2050). Key findings highlight strong resource potential but limited enabling infrastructure, finance, and certification alignment. The roadmap outlines priorities to harmonise policy, develop regional SAF hubs, and mobilise investment, positioning Africa as a future contributor to global sustainable aviation supply chains.
