Sustainable integrated agricultural management practices - Prospects of a sustainable production of biomass

Assessment of Different Agroforestry Management Practices for Energy Production in Relation to Key Soil Properties

Short Introductive summary

Sustainable land management plays a central role in the transition toward a circular and low-carbon bioeconomy. Among the available strategies, agroforestry systems, which integrate tree and crop production on the same land, are increasingly recognized for their potential to enhance biomass supply while maintaining or improving soil quality and ecosystem functions. In contrast with intensive monocultures, agroforestry aims to reproduce the ecological complexity of natural systems, providing multiple services such as carbon sequestration, nutrient cycling, erosion control, and biodiversity enhancement. This research investigates how different management systems, ranging from conventional agriculture to short-rotation forestry and integrated agroforestry, affect the chemical, physical, and biological characteristics of the soil. The focus is on their environmental impacts and implications for sustainable bioenergy production. Conducted within the experimental fields of the CREA-IT (Council for Agricultural Research and Agricultural Economy Analysis) in Monterotondo, Italy, the study compares five management systems: eucalyptus short rotation coppice, poplar short rotation coppice, po
