Assessment of Charcoal Production with Non-Industrial Kiln Technologies

Short Introductive summary

Charcoal production represents one of the oldest and most widespread forms of biomass thermochemical conversion, transforming woody materials into a stable, carbon-rich bioenergy carrier. Despite technological advances in industrial pyrolysis, non-industrial or small-scale systems continue to play an important role, especially in rural areas or in forest contexts where decentralized processing of woody residues is needed. This work analyzes the production process of charcoal using non-industrialized systems, with particular attention to a modern prototype of a mobile kiln developed to improve process efficiency, reduce environmental impacts, and ensure higher quality of the final product. The study forms part of research efforts conducted within the INGECA and BIOACTAM projects, both aimed at the valorization of agroforestry residues and the promotion of sustainable and low-impact bioenergy solutions. By combining traditional knowledge with technological innovation, this research contributes to the optimization of small-scale pyrolysis systems, enabling local and sustainable production of charcoal and biochar for multiple applications, ranging from energy and agriculture to horticu
