Forest biomass resources: management, mobility and techno-economic assessments
Mapping, Validation, and Implementation of Forest Road Infrastructure for Sustainable Forest Management Planning
Short Introductive summary
Forest ecosystems play a fundamental role in the transition toward a low-carbon and bio-based economy, serving as key providers of renewable biomass resources and vital ecosystem services. However, the sustainable mobilization of forest biomass depends not only on forest productivity but also on the efficiency and environmental compatibility of forest operations and access infrastructure. In many European contexts, particularly in the Mediterranean region, the lack of adequate forest road networks limits forest management activities, increases extraction costs, and reduces the potential contribution of forests to decarbonisation objectives. This study examines the forest road network as a strategic component of sustainable forest management, focusing on its role in supporting efficient, low-impact forest utilization and the sustainable supply of woody biomass. The research was conducted in the Selva del Lamone Regional Nature Reserve (Viterbo, Italy), a representative Mediterranean forest ecosystem characterized by high natural value, complex topography, and limited accessibility. The work integrates GIS-based mapping, field validation, and accessibility analysis
