The CARINA project integrates oil-seed crops into diversified farming systems to supply low iLUC (indirect Land Use Change)-risk feedstocks for the circular bioeconomy. Innovative cropping strategies, enable biomass production without displacing food crops. These crops serve as feedstock for bio-based products such as biostimulants, bioplastics, and biofertilizers. A sustainability assessment method was developed, focusing on 10 environmental indicators. This study evaluates the environmental performance of a camelina-based biostimulant value chain using LCA (Life Cycle Assessment), covering field cultivation, seed crushing, and industrial processing. Three cropping systems were analyzed: cash-cover double cropping and camelina on marginal lands. Inventories were assessed using the EU Environmental Footprint method to identify hotspots and inform strategies for environmental optimization. Next steps include refining data, expanding cropping system analysis, integrating the RSB P&C (Roundtable on Sustainable Biomaterials Principles & Criteria) framework, engaging stakeholders, and conducting sensitivity analyses to improve sustainability across the CARINA Value Chains (VCs).
