Rehabilitating Contaminated Soils via Phytomanagement for Circular Bio-Based Applications: A Belgian Field Case within IASIS

Short Introductive summary

As part of the IASIS project, the University of Liège is conducting a field case study in Wallonia (Belgium), a former industrial site contaminated with hydrocarbons and heavy metals. Funded by Horizon Europe and the CBE JU, IASIS is exploring phytomanagement as a sustainable strategy for the remediation of contaminated and saline soils across Europe. Through eight field case studies, including the one conducted in Wallonia, the project aims to demonstrate how non-food crops can be grown on degraded land using low-input practices. These crops serve as raw materials for high value-added bio-based products within cascading biorefinery value chains. The initial results of pot trials and the first growing season show that crop establishment is promising. The harvested biomass is currently being analysed to determine its yield (fibre or seeds), pollutant content and fibre quality, and will be processed for downstream applications. A second growing season is planned for spring 2026, and preliminary results will be presented. This project contributes to the transition to a bio-based economy by proposing reproducible models for land rehabilitation, reducing pressure on agricultural soils.
