Production of Sustainable Aviation Fuel from Wood Waste Via Gasification - Methanol to Jet Fuel: a Modelling And Optimization Approach

Aviation contributes about 2.5% of global CO2 emissions, intensifying atmospheric warming due to high-altitude effects. In this scenario, sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) emerge as strategic alternatives to reduce environmental impacts. Among production routes, methanol stands out as a key intermediate derived from wood waste gasification and converted into high-quality synthetic fuels via the methanol-to-jet (MtJ) pathway. This study optimizes SAF production from wood waste gasification, integrating technical and economic aspects through a mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) model. The objective is to maximize net present value (NPV) and minimize costs across the methyl route supply chain, considering biomass availability, logistics, and plant capacity. The model also estimates NPV and minimum selling price (MSP) to assess economic feasibility. The resulting MSP of 4,675.92 USD/t exceeds fossil jet fuel (˜697.6 USD/t), but the route shows strong potential under supportive carbon credit policies.
