Key Regional Bioenergy Value-Chains Analysis: Sustainable Outline and Biodiversity Indicators For Value-Chains Improvement
Short Introductive summary
This paper focuses on how forestry and agricultural residues can supply regional bioenergy value chains in a sustainable way. As part of the wider European project DIVERSE, this study analyses key regional bioenergy value-chains and outlines shared sustainability and biodiversity indicators for value-chain improvement. According to EU policy, RED III biodiversity and sustainable bioenergy production are two core concepts that reinforce one another and are equally important. In addition, 60% of the total reduction in terrestrial biodiversity until 2010 (measured as Mean Species Abundance, MSA) has been primarily driven by the agriculture and forestry sectors alone , which cause significant land use changes, one of the leading factors in biodiversity loss. Therefore, it is crucial to focus on residual biomass within these sectors to develop sustainable supply chains that support environmental, social, and economic sustainability.
