Short Introductive summary

The presented work highlights the potential of thermomechanical treatment, involving controlled degradation of plant-based materials (PBMs), to broaden their application range in the development of wood-polymer composites and to merge related benefits into a single innovative process – BIOTMEG™ – Biomass Refinement through Intentional ThermoMechanical Degradation during Extrusion Grinding. As examples of waste-based PBMs, apple pomace (BAP) from apple juice production and brewers’ spent grain (BSG) from beer manufacturing have been used. Both BAP and BSG have been subjected to thermomechanical treatment in a co-rotating twin screw extruder at varying temperatures. The extrusion parameters and volatile organic compounds emissions have been assessed. Prior to incorporation into the polypropylene (PP) matrix, treated biomass has been comprehensively characterized for changes in appearance, chemical structure and composition, polarity, thermal stability, and antioxidant activity. The impact of thermomechanically induced variations in biomass on melt-processing characteristics and the structure and performance of PP-based WPCs has been comprehensively assessed.
