How to Locate Anaerobic Digesters within a Territory to Enhance Biomethane Production?

In order to maximize the use of the biomass available in a territory and its potential to produce biomethane, this study used databases providing the quantity and the location of 14 different types of residual agricultural biomasses that could be used as inputs for anaerobic digestion (AD) sites. This information, displayed with the use of a Geographic Information Systems software (QGIS®), allowed the development of a methodology that localize a not pre-defined number of AD sites, taking into account geographical constraints, the morphology of roads involved on the supply of each digestion site proposed, and the temporal feasibility of these sites over five years. By determining the quantity of biomass available per site, it was possible to optimize the feed for each of them with the aim of maximizing its biochemical methane potential (BMP). The biomethane and the digestate production of each site was estimated using the SYS-Métha tool. The results obtained offer a new perspective about the usage of residual biomass within a territory, encouraging stakeholders to make informed decisions that benefit both the environment and local communities.
