Building Blocks for Sustainable Maritime Fuels: A Lab-Scale Bioelectrochemical Conversion Chain

Short Introductive summary

The Fuels-C project presents a modular and integrated approach to valorizing biodegradable organic waste into biomethane and ammonia, with the final goal of producing sustainable maritime fuels. Each technological “building block” of the process chain was developed and optimized at lab scale, combining anaerobic digestion, electromethanogenesis and a bioelectrochemical system for ammonium recovery from digestate, enhancing energy and materials recovery from biodegradable feedstocks, under mild operating conditions. The final objective of the study is to demonstrate the integrated Fuels-C technology at lab-scale, quantifying mass and energy balances and evaluating the overall conversion efficiency from feedstock to fuels. These results will inform future scale-up and contribute to the development of low-carbon, circular biofuel solutions for maritime applications.

Master degree in Environmental Engineering and Doctorate in Civil Engineering and Architecture. Principal researcher in the area of Bio-electrochemical technologies of Leitat. Expert in anaerobic digestion, dark fermentation, bioremediation and bioelectrochemical systems.
