Empowering Rice-Farming Communities through Participatory Approaches: Socio-Economic Insights from Rice Straw Bioenergy and Biochar Innovation in the Philippines

Short Introductive summary

Rice production generates large quantities of straw residue of approximately one tonne per tonne of rice paddy. This poses both an environmental and socio-economic challenge in Asia. In the Philippines, the widespread practice of open field burning contributes to greenhouse gas emissions, air pollution, and nutrient loss. At the same time, rice straw represents an underutilised biomass resource that could support renewable energy generation and soil enhancement through bioenergy and biochar technologies. Unlocking this potential requires approaches that extend beyond technological innovation to address social, economic, and institutional dimensions of sustainability.
