Changes in Brewer’s Spent Grain Biomasses Structure After Microwave-Assisted Pretreatment with Aqueous Solutions of Deep Eutectic Solvents
Short Introductive summary
The susceptibility of biomass to decomposition processes increases due to pretreatment, which is expected to lower the number of crystalline regions in cellulose and remove hemicellulose and lignins. The current study was aimed at determining the impact of microwave-assisted pretreatment using specific aqueous solutions of DES in selected process conditions on the composition and molecular structure of brewer’s spent grain (BSG) biomass. Biomass generated as a result of pretreatment using DES is marked by a more open structure, which is more easily accessible to enzymatic proteins. Changes in the structure of lignocellulose, covering mainly areas to do with hemicellulose and lignins, were observed in BSG biomass in the FTIR spectra. The NMR spectra confirm the determined changes, showing an increased intensity of signal at 62.5, 65.2, 72.2, 89.2 and 105.3 ppm, which are characteristic for lignins and cellulose, also in the crystalline form. In BSG biomass after microwave pretreatment with selected aqueous DES solutions, changes in the lignocellulose structure are observed, which indicate increased suitability of the indicated type of biomass in biosynthetic processes.
