Biomass conversion into bio-based chemicals and high-value compounds (part 1)

From Hemicellulose to Furfural: A Technical, Economic, and Environmental Assessment of Modern Conversion Routes

Short Introductive summary

This research assessed the technical, economic, and environmental aspects of modern routes to produce furfural from hemicellulose via a multi-criteria analysis. Despite numerous studies encompassing novel furfural production routes, with specific methods and improvements, there are limitations when evaluating them against each other. This work provides a logical and well-structured qualitative method that is suitable to evaluate early-stage technologies. Moreover, it contributes scientifically to the state-of-the-art knowledge by pointing out the most favorable pathways for furfural production, helping existing and upcoming biorefineries increase the valorization potential of their residues.
