Utilization of Lignocellulosic Biomass for Biopigment Production through Bacterias from the Brazilian Cerrado

Short Introductive summary

This study aims to utilize lignocellulosic biomass as an alternative substrate for biopigment production using bacteria from the Cerrado biome in Brazil. This approach reduces the cost and environmental impact of the pigment industry, causing less pollution and animal cruelty than traditional methods. Furthermore, it also contributes to a circular economy by utilizing substrates that are considered agroindustrial waste. The experiment was conducted using a 96-well microplate to grow two pigment-producing bacteria, Serratia marcescens and Rhodococcus kroppenstedtii, in spectrometer plate readers. Different conditions were measured, such as various substrates that contained distinct carbon concentrations or that were natural or synthetic and their best concentration. It was also tested optimal temperatures, pH values and pre-treatment methods. Finally, the results were statistically analyzed and they showed that the optimal growth condition of these microorganisms is 30°C (86°F), pH around 7 and the culture medium of coffee parchment and grains with 80% of hydrolysate concentration pre-treated in water.

Biotechnologist, currently, master's student in Microbial Biology at the University of Brasília. Currently, works in the area of bioprospecting bacteria from the Cerrado region for the production of biopigments from bioprocesses containing lignocellulosic biomass.
