Potential of Deep Eutectic Solvents for Closed-Loop Bio Polyesters Technologies
Short Introductive summary
The purpose of this research was to analyze existing studies on implementation of deep eutectic solvents in the extraction/chemical recycling of polyesters. Deep eutectic solvents are the green alternatives to traditionally used solvents and ionic liquids. Two cases were chosen for analysis: extraction of polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) from microbial cells and chemical recycling of polyester/cotton textiles. The processing parameters and operating conditions affecting the quality (e.g., molar mass, purity) and quantity of products were evaluated. Benefits and challenges associated with implementation of deep eutectic solvents were discussed. It was found that the composition of deep eutectic solvents should be tailored depending on the application. Since PHAs are a sustainable alternative to synthetic plastics in textile applications, the development of deep eutectic solvent technology covering full cycle of production/chemical recycling of PHA-based textiles might become a need in future.
