Plasticizer for Polymer Derived from Lignocellulosic Biomass
Short Introductive summary
In this study, the potential of monoterpenes, extractive components from lignocellulosic biomass, as eco-friendly plasticizers were investigated. Specifically, a-phellandrene was reacted with maleic anhydride via a Diels–Alder reaction to obtain a cyclic compound. The resulting product was then reacted with methanol to form a diester structure, and the chemical structure of the final compound was elucidated by NMR analysis. To evaluate its plasticizing performance, the synthesized compound was blended with poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) to prepare films. For comparison, films containing dimethyl phthalate (DMP) as a conventional plasticizer were also fabricated. The interactions between each plasticizer and the PVC chains were examined using FT-IR analysis, while tensile strength and elongation at break were measured using a universal testing machine (UTM). Thermal properties were further analyzed by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC).
