Biostimulants Extracted from Microalgae Cultivated in Seawater-Wastewater to Improve the Growth of Wheat Seeds on Salt Stress

Short Introductive summary

Biostimulants are used to promote the plants growth in salt-affected soils. Microalgae cultivated in seawater-wastewater mixture are rich in bioactive compounds with strong antioxidant, which can probably improve the growth of plants. However, few studies pay attention to biostimulants production from microalgae, especially microalgae extracts. In this study, Coelastrella sp. SDEC-28 cultivated in seawater-wastewater were chosen as biostimulants to study the effects of different microalgal extracts on the early growth of wheat seeds on salt stress. The results showed that three extracts (methanol extract, crude polysaccharide, and crude lipid) derived from Coelastrella sp. SDEC-28 were able to promote wheat seeds growth and enhance salt stress tolerance under 10‰ stress tolerance, including developments of shoot and root, increasement of fresh weight, and seeds germination. The study demonstrated that extracts from microalgae cultivated in seawater-wastewater hold potential for application as microalgae-derived biostimulants.
