From Nanocatalysis to Heterogeneous Catalytic System: A Bottom-Up Strategy for Selective HMF Oxidation to FDCA
Short Introductive summary
This study introduces a nanocatalytic approach for the selective oxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) to 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) under mild and environmentally friendly conditions. Using unsupported palladium nanoparticles as a "quasi-homogeneous" catalytic system, high activity and selectivity were achieved with air as the sole oxidant at atmospheric pressure. This configuration makes it possible to observe the intrinsic behavior of the active metal and to better understand the reaction mechanism, notably the involvement of hydroxyl species generated from water. These findings contribute to the design of more efficient and sustainable catalytic processes for the valorization of bio-based molecules.

Presenter's biography
I graduated with a MSc in sustainable energy production and storage from Université de Picardie Jules Verne and an engineering diploma from ESCOM Chimie. After a 5-year apprenticeship at REALCAT (hte in catalysis), I started a PhD in October 2023 at IRCELYON on HMF oxidation.
