Evaluation of 2,3-Butanediol Production using Brewer’s Spent Grains and Acid Whey in a Co-culture System

Short Introductive summary

This project evaluates a synergistic co-culture system composed of Pseudomonas putida and Paenibacillus polymyxa for the sustainable production of 2,3-butanediol (2,3-BDO) from brewer’s spent grain (BSG) and acid whey. In this system, P. putida functions as a biological detoxifier, removing inhibitory compounds generated during the acid hydrolysis of BSG, while P. polymyxa metabolises fermentable sugars, such as glucose, xylose, galactose, and arabinose, into 2,3-butanediol (2,3-BDO). The study integrates the liquid and solid fractions of pretreated BSG with varying concentrations of acid whey in a simultaneous saccharification and fermentation process, comparing mono- and co-culture conditions. The results demonstrate a significant improvement in inhibitor removal and higher 2,3-BDO titers under co-culture conditions, highlighting its potential as a biotechnological strategy for the valorization of lignocellulosic biomass and the sustainable production of bio-based compounds.

Presenter's biography

I began my academic training in Pharmaceutical Chemistry at the technical level, later shifting my focus toward the engineering aspects of biotechnology during my bachelor’s and master’s studies. Over time, I developed a strong interest in sustainability and circular economy approaches.
