The EU’s climate neutrality and circular economy goals demand the scaling up and de-risking of novel technologies to accelerate the decarbonization of European energy industry. In this context, the Horizon Europe funded ABATE project is working to industrialise a sustainable value chain by integrating thermochemical and biochemical technologies for the valorisation of lignocellulosic residual and non-food/feed biomass into cost-competitive, carbon-neutral Advanced Bio-based intermediATEs (ABATEs) to directly substitute fossil hydrocarbons in conventional oil refineries to be used by the aviation and maritime sectors The thermochemical pathway was validated in technology readiness level (TRL) 5 via the Horizon 2020 BioMates project, which involved a two-step valorisation of lignocellulosic biomass, rendering a bio-based intermediate which was effectively co-processed with fossil-based intermediates rendering high bio-content transportation fuels. The ABATE project builds on the outcomes of the BioMates project by improving and scaling up the thermochemical pathway to TRL6-7 as well as integrating it with bio-chemical technologies to valorise all by-products.
