Feedstock potentials, biomass supply and demand
Biomass Supply and Demand in the EU 2012-2022
Short Introductive summary
Biomass is a central resource in the EU bioeconomy, serving as a primary feedstock across multiple sectors. Yet, significant data gaps persist regarding biomass supply and demand. This study provides updated, consistent EU27 data for 2012–2022 on biomass supply, demand, and trade, using an enhanced methodological framework building on the JRC biomass flow analysis. It quantifies flows across agriculture, forestry, and fisheries and aquaculture, and distinguishes primary, secondary, and tertiary biomass to reflect cascading use. All data are expressed in tons of dry matter to enable comparison. In 2022, total biomass supply in the EU reached 1.2 billion tdm, with 82% originating from primary biomass, while secondary and tertiary sources accounted for 7% and 11%, respectively. On the demand side, feed and animal bedding and food represented the largest share (47%), followed by energy (29%) and material use (24%).The results establish a coherent basis to monitor EU biomass flows, assess circularity, and inform policy on trade-offs between energy, material, and food and feed uses.
