Resource efficient biomass use assessment approaches
Entropy Management of PLA: Novel State-based Screening Method for Decision-Support from Feedstock to End-of-life Treatment
Short Introductive summary
The potential of biomass as an alternative resource has been acknowledged. However, its implementationhas been limited due to some challenges. Feedstocks vary in composition, producing a broad range of end products through many different conversion processes. Following the novelty of bioresources in the industry, many of these processes are not yet commercial, creating uncertainty on performance, environmental impacts and profitability, which are all important aspects in making decisions for implementing these processes. Currently, decisions based on process-based assessments (e.g., life cycle assessments and techno-economic analysis). These methods are only valid for specific predefined process conditions, conversion processes, and contexts limitingcomparability between different studies, while requiring a comprehensive data inventory. Using biomass as alternative resource is novel for many conversion processes lacking the required data for such a inventory. This work proposes an initial screening tool that guides decisions consistent with process-based assessments for which the data is insufficiently available.
