Overcoming Challenges in Sustainability Certification: Enhancing the Role of Certification Schemes and Labels in the EU Bioeconomy
Short Introductive summary
This study investigates the challenges companies face in achieving sustainability certification in biobased value chains and explores strategies to overcome them. We use a mixed-method approach (literature review, stakeholder interviews, and stakeholder analysis), and identify the main barriers as financial, administrative, and knowledge-related, particularly for smallholders. We also highlight mitigation options such as simplified procedures, harmonized standards, targeted support, and knowledge sharing. The research emphasizes a multi-stakeholder approach, showing that while certification schemes and policymakers are influential, successful implementation also depends on coordination with local actors, NGOs, and support networks. Overall, the study provides insights for designing more inclusive and effective certification systems and supports equitable participation in sustainable bioeconomy markets.
