Integrating Biomethane into Natural Gas Systems in Brazil: A Bibliometric Review from Regulatory Lessons from International Gas Markets

The accelerating global energy transition underscores the need to reconfigure natural gas infrastructures to align with decarbonization goals, economic competitiveness, and energy security. Within this context, biomethane emerges as a renewable, distributed, and scalable complement to natural gas, capable of reducing greenhouse gas emissions and fostering regional integration. Brazil’s regulatory framework has advanced structural reforms such as unbundling and open access. However, challenges remain, including limited pipeline interconnection and regional regulatory asymmetries. The present work employs a dual methodological approach combining bibliometric analysis and comparative regulatory assessment. It identifies global research trends on biomethane integration and draws lessons from mature gas markets. By mapping convergences and divergences in governance and infrastructure models, the research seeks to inform a coherent regulatory pathway for Brazil—one that enhances competitiveness, ensures investment security, and supports low-carbon development through the integration of biomethane into the national gas network.
