Closing The Loop: Life Cycle Assessment of Innovative Valorisation Strategies for Food Processing Residues Into Soil Improvers

Short Introductive summary

Food waste is a major global issue, with one-third of all food lost or wasted, causing economic losses and environmental harm. In Europe, 59 million tonnes of food waste yearly generate €132 billion in losses and 252 million tonnes of CO2. About 30% are nutrient-rich Food Processing Residues (FPRs), often landfilled, releasing methane. The Waste4Soil project develops sustainable methods to convert FPRs into soil improvers through composting, hydrolysis, and anaerobic digestion, promoting a circular economy. A life cycle assessment, following ISO 14040/14044, evaluates these innovations’ environmental performance and identifies key stages and hotspots for improving sustainability across the food value chain.
