Techno-economic and Environmental Assessment of Community Energy Systems: Insights from the CRETE VALLEY Project

Short Introductive summary

The CRETE VALLEY project demonstrates the potential of decentralized, community-scale clean energy systems to strengthen energy resilience in island regions. Four Community Energy Labs (CELs) in Crete integrate renewable, storage, and hydrogen technologies to achieve sustainability and affordability goals. Techno-economic and life cycle assessments confirm their viability, showing significant cost and environmental benefits, especially for CELs 1–3. While hydrogen remains cost-challenging, CELs foster local value creation and social equity. Despite technical and administrative barriers, the CEL model offers a replicable framework for accelerating Europe’s transition to resilient, low-carbon energy systems.
