Hydrogen from Sewage Sludge: Insights from the B2H2 Project

Short Introductive summary

The B2H2 project aims to experiment, test, and validate, from an economic and technical point of view, the possibility of upgrading a pilot HTC technology coupled with a gasification unit (developed by HBI) in order to produce clean and renewable hydrogen from sewage sludge. By the end of the project, it also aims to create a prototype device to be applied to the existing HBI plant, implementing the solutions identified within the project itself. There are basically two potential methods of hydrogen production: by separating ammonia from the liquid phase produced downstream of the HTC process and its subsequent electrolysis; by upgrading the syngas gasification system, exploiting the water gas shift reaction (WGS: CO + H2O ? CO2 + H2) and subsequent separation of hydrogen from other gases.

Presenter's biography

I am a researcher at the Faculty of Engineering of the Free University of Bolzano (Italy), where I have also obtained my PhD. My research activities are mostly focused on the valorization of biomass through thermochemical processes and the upgrade of the syngas to hydrogen and biofuels.
