Industrial-scale Production of PHA-rich Biomass from Wastewater Sludge: the B-Plas Modular Process for Integrated Biowaste Valorisation

Short Introductive summary

The B-Plas technology offers an innovative, sustainable solution for wastewater sludge management in Europe. Developed by B-Plas sbrl, it converts secondary sludge from wastewater treatment plants into microbial biomass rich in biodegradable polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs), valuable alternatives to fossil-based plastics. The process combines thermochemical, biological, and mechanical steps. Hydrothermal Carbonization (HTC) solubilizes carbon and solids, acidogenic fermentation generates volatile fatty acids (VFAs). After solid-liquid separation the VFA-rich liquid feeds a continuous aerobic system for the production of PH-rich biomass. The resulting biomass is recovered and can be further processed into bioplastics or bio-based products.
