Biomass conversion into bio-based chemicals and high-value compounds (part 1)
Valorization of Lignocellulosic Biomass by Hydrothermal Methods: Lignin Recovery and Production of Activated Carbon for Dye Removal
Short Introductive summary
This work focuses on the valorization of lignocellulosic residues from pine wood through integrated hydrothermal processes for the production of high-value carbon materials. The study involves the optimization of the organosolv process for efficient lignin recovery, followed by its conversion into hydrochar and activated carbons. Chemical activation using KOH yielded materials with high surface areas and excellent adsorption performance for methylene blue, reaching values up to 400 mg g?¹. This approach demonstrates a sustainable pathway for transforming underutilized by-products from bioethanol production into efficient adsorbents for water purification, contributing to circular bioeconomy strategies and renewable resource utilization.
