Renewable Fuels of Non-Biological Origin from Biogenic Carbon Dioxide from Bioprocesses: A Synergic Strategy for Decarbonization

Short Introductive summary

This study investigates the potential of Renewable Fuels of Non-Biological Origin (RFNBOs) in the European Union’s energy transition framework considering a policy-compliant scenarios where the use of biogenic CO2 from biofuels and bioenergy production is considered. The study provides additional insights on the decarbonization scenario developed within the Clean Energy Technology Observatory (CETO) using the Policy Oriented Tool for Energy and Climate Change Impact Assessment (POTEnCIA model). The study investigates synergies between the RFNBOs and bioenergy supply chains. Despite challenges, such as high production costs and infrastructure requirements, RFNBOs consumption is expected to ramp up quickly. The final scope of the study is to provide a comprehensive energy scenario assessment for informing EU policy decisions and identifying investment needs for a sustainable energy transition. The findings of this modelling exercise are instrumental to support the EU´s transition towards a resilient and low-carbon energy system, ensuring that biomass is used in an optimal and efficient way as a part of the EU’s renewable energy portfolio.
