The Effects of Protein Reduction in the Feedstocks of HTL on the Resulting Biocrude: A Case Study on P. Kessleri Microalgae as a Feedstock.
Short Introductive summary
The hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) of protein-rich feedstocks results in a high nitrogen content in the produced biocrude. Microalgae are a 3rd generation feedstock that can be used in HTL, and by modifying the growth conditions, the protein content can be reduced and the lipid content increased. To further reduce this nitrogen, the proteins can be removed through solvent extraction. These three states of the same microalga (P. kessleri grown in autotrophic conditions, starved, and deproteinated using pH-shift) were used in HTL microbatch reactors and the biocrude was analyzed. It was concluded that the amidation reaction is the prevalent reaction and that proteins are the limiting reagent with respect to their interaction with lipids.
