Valorising Forest, Marine, and Coffee Biomass into Antifungal Bioactives for the Control of Banana Fusarium Wilt

Short Introductive summary

Banana wilt, caused by Fusarium spp., represents a major threat to banana production worldwide. Conventional control strategies are relying nowadays in synthethic fungicides. However, new sustainable alternatives are required. The use of by-products from biorefinery and coffee-based industries as a source of antifungal compounds has started to be considered. The aim of this study, part of an EU Project (CROPSAFE), was to evaluate the effect of forest, marine and coffee-based bioactive extracts against ’Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cubense’ fungal growth and germination.

Presenter's biography

Postdoctoral researcher at the University of Alicante, member of the Plant Pathology group. My research is focused in the pathogenicity mechanisms, and biocontrol strategies to control Fusarium wilt in banana crops.
