Combined Leaching and Steam Explosion Pretreatment for Producing High-Quality Black Pellets for Thermochemical Applications

Short Introductive summary

Despite their abundance and carbon-neutral potential, low-grade biomass residues lead to several issues in thermochemical conversion due to high-ash content and various inherent physicochemical properties. Hence, a novel pretreatment was developed and studied thoroughly on a range of low-grade biomass residues (agricultural, industrial and forest) to produce high-quality black pellets. Treated Pellets have high HHV (19-21 MJ/kg), high durability (98%), and very low alkali (0.04-0.6 wt.%) and Cl content (0.01 wt.%), making them suitable for thermochemical conversion units that need cleaner, low-ash biomass pellets.

I am currently working as an Assistant Professor at IIT Gandhinagar, India. My main areas of research are biomass pretreatment, biomass ash-related issues in thermochemical conversion, solid waste management (characterisation and design), LCA and EIA.
