Short Introductive summary

Combining hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) with integrated salt separation in a continuous setup is supposed to increase the economics of the process by allowing to reuse homogeneous catalysts and valorize by-products from the aqueous phase. This study aimed to optimize the hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) conditions for the microalgae Scenedesmus sp. and Chlorella sorokiniana to maximize carbon-based biocrude yield under sub- and supercritical water conditions. The work supports the development of PSI’s continuous HTL system, KONTI-L, within the Horizon Europe-funded SUSTEPS project, which aims to scale up sustainable biofuel production from microalgae.
