Short Introductive summary

This work aims to develop and optimize a continuous-flow one-pot catalytic process for the direct conversion of bio-based 2,3-butanediol (2,3-BDO) into olefins which could be used as precursors (via hydrogenation) of aviation fuel (SAF) range. The system integrates Cu supported on hierarchical ZSM-5 zeolite (Cu@h-ZSM-5) for 2,3-BDO dehydration to butenes, and NiO@ZSM-5 for subsequent oligomerization into C8–C16 hydrocarbons. Different zeolite architectures were characterized and evaluated to improve reactivity and selectivity toward this reaction. Reaction pressure was systematically varied under continuous operation to correlate process conditions with conversion, selectivity, and stability. On the other hand, water was intentionally introduced into the feedstock to assess its influence on the catalytic performance. Since water is inherently present in real biomass-derived streams, this test was designed to simulate more realistic operating conditions and evaluate how its presence affects the reactivity, selectivity, and stability of the catalytic system.

Presenter's biography

Patricia Pizarro is Full Professor at Universidad Rey Juan Carlos and Associate Senior Researcher at IMDEA Energy. She coordinates the EU Horizon Europe project BIOCTANE, focused on the sustainable conversion of biowaste into aviation fuels by combining thermochemical and biotechnological processes.
