Algae and aquatic biomass production systems

Advancing Blue Biorefinery Development in the Adriatic Sea (BIOBASED Project)

Short Introductive summary

The second edition of the EU Algae Awareness Summit (Berlin, 16–17 October 2025) gathered over 250 participants from academia, industry, policy and civil society to discuss how algae can accelerate Europe’s blue bioeconomy, strengthen food security, support climate neutrality and contribute to marine ecosystem restoration. Key developments included the signing of the Algae Declaration by Germany, France and Greece - soon to be joined by Finland and Portugal - marking a collective commitment to integrate algae more fully into national and EU strategic frameworks. The Summit also showcased how algal technologies are maturing across diverse sectors, from food, feed, biomaterials and biostimulants to textiles, coatings and ecosystem services. These outcomes highlight a decisive policy and market shift: marine seaweeds and microalgae are evolving from niche applications to strategic bioresources underpinning the European Green Deal and the Sustainable Blue Economy. Within this dynamic context, the BIOBASED Project (Interreg Italy–Croatia 2021–2027) exemplifies the translation of EU policy ambitions into applied regional innovation. Coordinated by the University of Foggia, BIOBASED aims
