Biogas to What? A Techno-Economic Optimization and Infrastructure Study on Future Biogas Valorisation

Short Introductive summary

This work analyses innovative utilisation pathways for biogas, investigating bio-H2 and bio-e-methanol production through electrified steam methane reforming (eSMR)-based processes. The aim is to address key gaps in the existing literature through: (i) Comprehensive process analysis, including simulations and the study of chemical plant behaviour at part-load and in different operating points; (ii) System-level integration, modelling the process with intermittent renewable sources, Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), gas and liquid storages, and the logistics for biogas utilisation in industrial clusters with hydrogen and CO2 infrastructure. The systems were optimised with a novel MILP framework, through annual simulations with hourly discretization to evaluate their performance when integrated with intermittent renewable sources and storage systems and to assess the economic benefits of flexibility.
