Towards a Biomass Merit Order: Cost-Effective Biomass Allocation in a Low-Fossil World

Biomass is a uniquely flexible but limited carbon and energy resource, capable of supporting both energy provision and carbon dioxide removal (CDR) through bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS). In a world transitioning away from fossil fuel use, determining the cost-effective allocation of scarce biomass across competing sectors becomes central to achieving deep decarbonization. This study uses the REMIND-MAgPIE integrated assessment model (IAM) to explore the concept of a biomass merit order—a hierarchy of optimal biomass uses under varying technology and resource constraints.

Robert is a Postdoctoral Researcher with the Integrated Assessment Model Group. His work focusses on CDR and CCU. He investigates supply-side aspects of residual hydrocarbon demand, with a particular focus on biomass and bioenergy pathways.
